Quarterly Meetings & Activities

Quarterly Meetings are held four times per year, as their name implies. In the early days of the society we embarked on quarterly weekend trips to local historic places such as the Clark Mansion and Smiley Library in Redlands, Edwards Mansion in San Bernardino, the Bunker Hill home tour hosted by the Los Angeles Conservancy, etc.

Our current focus is to hold an Annual Holiday Party each year, at which time the election for our board of directors is held. This quarterly meeting also serves as our annual general meeting. Our annual holiday parties are especially popular among our members and guests.

We also strive throughout the year to provide fun and meaningful learning experiences to our members by scheduling events such as those portrayed below:

On April 19, 2003, Corona City Clerk Vicki Wasko
provided CHPS members the great opportunity to
tour the Corona City Archive Center,
located at the city’s Corporation Yard.

The Corona High School’s Madrigal Choir performed at our
Annual Holiday Party held on December 11, 2003 at the
beautiful and lovingly restored home of Bruce and Debi Erick,
known historically as the Willits Home.

“A Postcard Tour Through Corona’s Past “
was held on September 8, 2004 at
Corona Heritage Park.
Postcard collectors Mary Winn and Diane Wright
presented a slideshow to over 85 CHPS members
and community members.

Vintage Home Relocation Seminar
At a November 22, 2004 meeting held at Corona Heritage Park,
Jim Youden of the Old Riverside Foundation shared information with
CHPS members on the process of relocating historic homes.
Topics covered were:
»  How to acquire a vintage home
»  How to move a vintage home
»  How to work with City Departments

Our Annual Holiday Party was held at the
home of Richard & Mary Winn
on December 9, 2004.
CHPS member Scott Richardson provided
a fascinating presentation on the history
and development of “big wheeler” bicycles.
He even brought along one of his shiny
penny farthing bicycles to share with us.

Patricia Link and Richard Brooks of the Corona Building Department
presented information on the State Historical Building Code
to CHPS members and others.
The seminar was held on September 28, 2005, just a few months
after the “new” City Hall opened at 400 South Vicentia Avenue.

On January 21, 2006 we toured two local venues on a Saturday morning: 1) Quality
West Wing, a hands-on tour of Washington DC sites, including an exact replica of the
Oval Office, and, 2) Nearby Uncle Bud’s - A Journey Through Automotive History,
a vintage automotive experience.

An Oral History Workshop in the Community Room of the Corona
Public Library on February 28, 2006. Here we see 23 CHPS and
Genealogical Society members listen intently to presenter Stephanie
George of the Oral History Department at CSUF. She taught us how to
conduct a family interview or collect a meaningful oral history and also
provided information on proper recording equipment.

The CHPS Caravan of the Markers was held
on March 25, 2006.
This activity was our first organized driving/walking
tour of CHPS’ historic markers. A bright blue and yellow
umbrella marked our progress as we moved from
site to site. Richard Winn served as our guide.
At the end of the tour, we enjoyed great camaraderie
as we ate lunch at Corona Heritage Park.

We visited the spectacular Riverside’s Heritage
House on May 20th, 2006 and enjoyed every
minute of our very educational tour. Docents Gayle
and Sylvia, in Victorian dress in the photograph,
made our visit a huge success.

On March 10, 2007, we were very fortunate to learn
more about the Mission Inn. The event
took place in the Community Room of the
Historic Corona Civic Center and the presenters
were Kim Jarrell Johnson and Steve Lech. Both
are docents at Mission Inn as well as co-authors of
Images of America: Mission Inn book. Attendees
enjoyed meeting the authors and were able to purchase
autographed copies of their books.

On Saturday, August 18, 2007 we took a tour of the Corona City Archives Center.
The event was hosted by City Clerk Vicki Wasko, and staff members
Debi Thomsen and Lorena Verdusco.
Historical documents and materials were available for all to view.

Norconian presentation: On January 12, 2008, Norco historian and author Kevin Bash
provided a slide presentation detailing the history and status of:
»  The Norconian Resort Supreme
»  The Corona Naval Hospital
»  The California Rehabilitation Center

On Saturday, September 15, 2007, we enjoyed a presentation on
Corona Citrus Labels by Linda Faxon, a Corona resident who has
collected Corona citrus labels for over 30 years.
Linda brought her entire collection of original labels and we were
able to view them up close and personal.

A group of CHPS members visited the Yorba-Slaughter Families Adobe
on March, 29 2008. We enjoyed the view of the Prado Basin
and explored the sturdy adobe residence as well as
the former winery/barn structure and the General Store/Post Office.
